Before looking at chapter 1, personally I would look at Joh 1:1-5
For John writes here about how in the beginning the Word existed, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. We see here Jesus Christ the eternal Word, Son of God from everlasting to everlasting in His radiant glorious glory that outshines the sun the moon the stars and the universe reigned with His Father God and God the Holy Spirit beyond the universe, time, space and history. Central to John the evangelists heart and spiritual know how as gifted to him from the Holy Spirit, is the fact that the Word - Jesus Christ is the gateway into the very presence of God which includes Himself the Son of God. He is the Creator of all things, we know that God spoke and the earth came into being. He breathes life, His words are life. He came into this world of darkness and was a light shining in the darkness.
Without the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit even today those in darkness cannot understand things that are spiritual, they cannot understand the light.
1Jn 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life--
1Jn 1:2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us--
1Jn 1:3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
1Jn 1:4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.
Now going on to 1 John chapter 1, John affirms that he had in person seen and heard Jesus in person and that he believed and in fact knew Him as the one who was there from the beginning. My thoughts go to the fact that John was right there at the cross when Jesus died. This is the man who writes this letter.
Joh 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!"
Joh 19:27 Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
John dearly loved the Lord and Jesus loved the writer of this Epistle, he entrusted him with the care of His own earthly mother. He was also entrusted with the revelation for the book of Revelation.
Jesus is described as the Word of life, God manifest in the flesh. John wants the readers to know that he had seen the eternal one in the flesh and that he without any shadow of a doubt recognized him as God. John and the other apostles had something to celebrate , something to witness to and because of that they can't keep silent , they want others to share in the wonderful fellowship and communion they have with each other but most of all having communion with the Lord Jesus Christ and God the Father. They wrote those things that the recipients of this letter and surely us today might have joy to the full. English does not give us a strong enough word for the joy that is meant here.
khar-ah'
From cheerfulness, that is, calm delight: - gladness, X greatly, (X be exceeding) joy (-ful, -fully, -fulness, -ous).
The hebrew equivalent word is joyful - gheel, gool
A primitive root; properly to spin around (under the influence of any violent emotion), that is, usually rejoice, or (as cringing) fear: - be glad, joy, be joyful, rejoice.
So spin around and be joyful ! We can be exceedingly joyful for we have Jesus.
1Jn 1:5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
1Jn 1:6 If we say that we ha ve fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
1 John 1:5 And this is the message [the message of promise] which we have heard from Him and now are reporting to you: God is Light, and there is no darkness in Him at all [no, not in any way]. AMP
Looking at those verses how can any of us as believers expect to have close fellowship with the Lord while still bound to some sin or other. God is holy, in Him is no darkness and yes the blood of Jesus has made us righteous in our standing before our Heavenly Father, but intimacy can never be a reality.
If we are to be salt and light and it us who are to shine as light in the darkness of this world today, we must allow ourselves to be purified, go through the refiner's fire.
1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
He being the light, loved with that God kind of love, believed with that God kind of faith, forgave with God kind of forgiveness so if we are truly walking in the light we will learn to love like He loves, develop that God kind of faith, forgive like He forgives and we will have a greater level of fellowship with our Lord and Saviour and indeed each other. The blood of Jesus is applied to us at all times cleansing us, none of us while we inhabit our fleshly bodies are totally free of our sinful nature, but when we walk in such a place He has established a place for us to walk in fellowship with Abba Father, or Heavenly Father and Hmself and the Holy Spirit. We will hear His voice and follow Him.
1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1Jn 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
If one among us falls into sin, his or her close fellowship with the Godhead is interrupted, that sin can just be unbelief that God will deliver that which He has promised to us in His Word and interrupts our walk. I have been there, I've let those little doubts in, in certain situations and it has affected my walk with the Lord. I was still standing as the righteous before a Holy God but the beautiful close intimacy was interrupted, I had to repent and turn my face back to the Lord to restore that relationship.
