The Davidic kingdom

1. The divine choice of David (1 Samuel 16:1-13).

2. The giving of the Davidic Covenant (2 Samuel 7:8-16; Psalms 89:3,4,20,21,28-37).

2 Samuel 7:12-16 ESV
(12) When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
(13) He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
(14) I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,
(15) but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.
(16) And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.'"

Psalms 89:28-37 ESV
(28) My steadfast love I will keep for him forever, and my covenant will stand firm for him.
(29) I will establish his offspring forever and his throne as the days of the heavens.
(30) If his children forsake my law and do not walk according to my rules,
(31) if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commandments,
(32) then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes,
(33) but I will not remove from him my steadfast love or be false to my faithfulness.
(34) I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips.
(35) Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David.
(36) His offspring shall endure forever, his throne as long as the sun before me.
(37) Like the moon it shall be established forever, a faithful witness in the skies." Selah.

3. The exposition of the Davidic Covenant by the prophets Isaiah 1:25,26; Zechariah 12:6-8.

Zechariah 12:6-8 ESV
(6) "On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a blazing pot in the midst of wood, like a flaming torch among sheaves. And they shall devour to the right and to the left all the surrounding peoples, while Jerusalem shall again be inhabited in its place, in Jerusalem.
(7) "And the LORD will give salvation to the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem may not surpass that of Judah.
(8) On that day the LORD will protect the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them on that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the angel of the LORD, going before them.

The kingdom as described by the prophets is:

(a) Davidic, to be established under an heir of David, who is to be born of a virgin, therefore truly man, but also "Immanuel," "the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace" Isaiah 7:13,14; 9:6,7 ; 11:1; Jeremiah 23:5; Ezekiel 34:23; 37:24; Hosea 3:4,5.

Isaiah 7:14 ESV
(14) Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isaiah 9:6-7 ESV
(6) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
(7) Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Isaiah 11:1 ESV
(1) There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

Jeremiah 23:5-6 ESV
(5) "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
(6) In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: 'The LORD is our righteousness.'

Ezekiel 34:23-24 ESV
(23) And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd.
(24) And I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. I am the LORD; I have spoken.

Ezekiel 37:24 ESV
(24) "My servant David shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd. They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes.

Hosea 3:4-5 ESV
(4) For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or household gods.
(5) Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the LORD and to his goodness in the latter days.

(b) A kingdom heavenly in origin, principle, and authority Daniel 2:34,35,44,45 but set up on the earth, with Jerusalem as the capital ; Isaiah 2:2-4; 4:3,5 ; 24:23; 33:20; 62:1-7; Jeremiah 23:5; 31:38-40; Joel 3:1,16,17.

Daniel 2:44-45 ESV
(44) And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever,
(45) just as you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. A great God has made known to the king what shall be after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure."

Isaiah 2:2-4 ESV
(2) It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it,
(3) and many peoples shall come, and say: "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths." For out of Zion shall go the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
(4) He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.

Isaiah 24:23 ESV
(23) Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders.

Isaiah 62:1-7 ESV
(1) For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch.
(2) The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give.
(3) You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
(4) You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married.
(5) For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.
(6) On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the LORD in remembrance, take no rest,
(7) and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth.

Jeremiah 23:5 ESV
(5) "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

Joel 3:16-17 ESV
(16) The LORD roars from Zion, and utters his voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth quake. But the LORD is a refuge to his people, a stronghold to the people of Israel.
(17) "So you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who dwells in Zion, my holy mountain. And Jerusalem shall be holy, and strangers shall never again pass through it.

(c) The kingdom is to be established first over regathered, restored, and converted Israel, and then to become universal Psalms 2:6-8; 22:1-31;24:1-10; Isaiah 1:2,3; 11:1,10-13; 60:12; Jeremiah 23:5-8; Jeremiah 30:7-11; Ezekiel 20:33-40; 37:21-25; Zechariah 9:10; 14: 6-19

Psa 2:6-8 ESV
(6) "As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill."
(7) I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, "You are my Son; today I have begotten you.
(8) Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.

Isa 11:9-12 ESV
(9) They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.
(10) In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples--of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.
(11) In that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that remains of his people, from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the coastlands of the sea.
(12) He will raise a signal for the nations and will assemble the banished of Israel, and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

Jer 23:5-6 ESV
(5) "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
(6) In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: 'The LORD is our righteousness.'

Jer 30:7-11 ESV
(7) Alas! That day is so great there is none like it; it is a time of distress for Jacob; yet he shall be saved out of it.
(8) "And it shall come to pass in that day, declares the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off your neck, and I will burst your bonds, and foreigners shall no more make a servant of him.
(9) But they shall serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.
(10) "Then fear not, O Jacob my servant, declares the LORD, nor be dismayed, O Israel; for behold, I will save you from far away, and your offspring from the land of their captivity. Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease, and none shall make him afraid.
(11) For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD; I will make a full end of all the nations among whom I scattered you, but of you I will not make a full end. I will discipline you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.

Eze 20:33-34 ESV
(33) "As I live, declares the Lord GOD, surely with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with wrath poured out I will be king over you.
(34) I will bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the countries where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out.

Eze 37:21-28 ESV
(21) then say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will take the people of Israel from the nations among which they have gone, and will gather them from all around, and bring them to their own land.
(22) And I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. And one king shall be king over them all, and they shall be no longer two nations, and no longer divided into two kingdoms.
(23) They shall not defile themselves anymore with their idols and their detestable things, or with any of their transgressions. But I will save them from all the backslidings in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.
(24) "My servant David shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd. They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes.
(25) They shall dwell in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, where your fathers lived. They and their children and their children's children shall dwell there forever, and David my servant shall be their prince forever.
(26) I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set them in their land and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in their midst forevermore.
(27) My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
(28) Then the nations will know that I am the LORD who sanctifies Israel, when my sanctuary is in their midst forevermore."

Zec 14:9 ESV
(9) And the LORD will be king over all the earth. On that day the LORD will be one and his name one.

(d) The moral characteristics of the kingdom are to be righteousness and peace. The meek, not the proud, will inherit the earth; longevity will be greatly increased; the knowledge of the Lord will be universal; beast ferocity will be removed; absolute equity will be enforced; and out-breaking sin visited with instant judgment; while the enormous majority of earth's inhabitants will be saved Isaiah 11:4,6-9; 65:20; Psalms 2:9; Isaiah 26:9; Zechariah 14:16-21. The N.T. Revelation 20:1-5, adds a detail of immense significance--the removal of Satan from the scene. It is impossible to conceive to what heights of spiritual, intellectual, and physical perfection humanity will attain in this, its coming age of righteousness and peace. ; Isaiah 11:4-9; Psalms 72:1-10.

Isa 11:1-12 ESV
(1) There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
(2) And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
(3) And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
(4) but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
(5) Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins.
(6) The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.
(7) The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
(8) The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.

(e) The kingdom is to be established by power, not persuasion, and is to follow divine judgment upon the Gentile world-powers Psalms 2:4-9; Isaiah 9:7; Daniel 2:35,44,45; 7:26,27; Zechariah 14:1-19.

Psa 2:1-12 ESV
(1) Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
(2) The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his anointed, saying,
(3) "Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us."
(4) He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.
(5) Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying,
(6) "As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill."
(7) I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, "You are my Son; today I have begotten you.
(8) Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.
(9) You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel."
(10) Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.
(11) Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
(12) Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

(f) The Davidic Covenant has not been abrogated Psalms 89:33-37 but is yet to be fulfilled. Acts 15:14-17.

Psa 89:28-37 ESV

Why is this so important? To understand the NT properly - you must take into account that the people, culture and language of that were Jewish and very familiar with the Scriptures. When Jesus or one of the apostles used a phrase - the listeners could cite the whole chapter where that phrase is found.

Most of what is taught in the NT is not new. For example - the book of Revelation takes much of its imagery from Daniel, Ezekial and Zechariah. Water baptism wasn't a new doctrine - Jews had mikveh's for centuries before Jesus. The Last Supper is but one part of the Passover seder.

So after centuries of Scriptures filled with prophecies about the kingdom of God coming to earth - what was the Jew of Jesus' day to think when He announced that the kingdom of God was at hand?

When the angel announced to Mary:

and said "of His kingdom there shall be no end" - what did that mean? One has to look no further than 2 Samuel 7 or Psalms 89 for the answer.

When the disciples asked Jesus:

Jesus didn't rebuke them for asking the question or tell them "it's all spiritual - there is no earthly kingdom". He said it's coming in the future.

When the writer of Hebrews talks about "entering into the rest of God" - what does he mean? Men rested on the Sabbath. God's Sabbath is the 1,000 yrs He will personally rule the earth. For six days (or six thousand years) men work - but on the 7th day - they rest. We labor now so we can enter "the rest" or the sabbath or the kingdom of God when it is fully manifested on earth.

Can we bring about the kingdom ourselves? That was tried in the Catholic Church during what is called the Dark Ages. It didn't work out so great ;) The government of mankind will always be corrupt to some degree.

Notice in Psalms 2

Who sets the Son as King over the earth? God does.

The Davidic Covenant
From 2004

2 Samuel 7:8-17 (NKJV)
Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts: "I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel.
9 And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth.
10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously, 11 since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the Lord tells you that He will make you a house.
12 "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.
15 But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever." ' "
17 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

This covenant, upon which the glorious kingdom of Christ "of the seed of David according to the flesh" is to be founded, secures:

(1) The promise of posterity in the Davidic house.

(2) A throne symbolic of royal authority

(3) A kingdom, or rule on earth

(4) The certainty of fulfillment, for the promises to David "shall be established forever".

Solomon, whose birth God predicted (v. 12) was not promised a perpetual seed, but only assured that
a. that he would build a house for My Name.
b. his kingdom would be established
c. his throne, that is his royal authority, would endure forever
d. if Solomon sinned, he would be chastised but not deposed.

The continuance of Solomon's throne, but not Solomon's seed, shows the accuracy of the prediction. Israel had nine dynasties (different family lines), Judah had but one. Christ was born of Mary, who was a descendant of Nathan (Lk 3:23-31). Joseph, the husband of Mary was descended from Solomon and through him the throne passed legally to Jesus (Matt 1:6.16). Thus the throne, but not the seed, came through Solomon, which is in precise fulfillment of the Lord's promise to David.

The immutability of the covenant

Psalm 89:28-29 (NKJV)
My mercy I will keep for him forever,
And My covenant shall stand firm with him.
29 His seed also I will make to endure forever,
And his throne as the days of heaven.
Psalm 89:33-36 (NKJV)
Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not utterly take from him,
Nor allow My faithfulness to fail.
34 My covenant I will not break,
Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.
35 Once I have sworn by My holiness;
I will not lie to David:
36 His seed shall endure forever,
And his throne as the sun before Me;

I don't know how much more emphatic God has to get than what is stated right here in Psalms 89. The covenant cannot be broken.

Jesus is the fulfillment of the covenant

Luke 1:31-33 (NKJV)
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.
33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end."

Acts 2:29-32 (NKJV)
"Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,
31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.
32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.

Acts 15:14-17 (NKJV)
Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name.
15 And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written:
16 'After this I will return
And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down;
I will rebuild its ruins,
And I will set it up;
17 So that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord,
Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name,
Says the Lord who does all these things.'

What does he mean "after this"? You need to understand that all the early believers were Jewish. When Peter was called down to Cornelius' house, it amazed him that God would bless Gentiles as well as Jews. Paul's ministry to Gentiles confused some in the home church at Jerusalem.

James (the Lord's half-brother) explains it very well. God is going to allow Gentiles to be included in this age with the believing Jews (aren't you glad for that?). After this - after what? - after this age of Jews and Gentiles together being the Church - after this age is over - I will return - who will return? - the Lord. Why is He returning? To rebuild the tabernacle of David.

The literal kingdom was not fulfilled in Jesus' first coming. The spiritual aspects of the kingdom (new birth) were, but the physical fulfillment of a throne was not. Forty days after Jesus' resurrection, the disciples thought that perhaps now was the time (Acts 1:6-7). Jesus didn't correct them on their understanding of the kingdom, merely on its timing.

When Jesus' foot touches the Mt of Olives and splits it in two (Zech 14), He will judge the nations and then establish His kingdom in Jerusalem. From there, He will reign literally, on earth, for one thousand years. God's promise to David will be fulfilled.

JESUS is KING of KINGS ! The Kings HE is over us us!We are His kings Though the davidic kingship! And His Priests being grafted into the tribe of Judah!
1Pe 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Rev 1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Rev 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

GOD has Done So much for us at SALVATION!
We follow our LORD 100%!
Heb 7:14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

Heb 7:16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.
Heb 7:19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

Heb 7:12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

Heb 7:11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?
All GODS kids are Priests after the Same Order as our LORD and SAVIOR!

Joh 20:23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

Mat 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Mat 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Act 3:6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

Act 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

Rev 3:21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
